What are RFI, RFQ, and RFP? Core Differences Explained

Guide to selecting the correct procurement request type for vendor sourcing.

There are three fundamental request vehicles used in modern enterprise procurement:

1. RFI (Request for Information)

  • Objective: Survey market capabilities and identify qualified suppliers.
  • When to Use: Early exploration when technical requirements are still fluid.

2. RFQ (Request for Quotation)

  • Objective: Solicit precise line-item pricing for well-defined deliverables.
  • When to Use: Commodity purchases, standard hardware, or clearly specified services.

3. RFP (Request for Proposal)

  • Objective: Request detailed technical solutions, methodology, and commercial bids.
  • When to Use: Custom software builds, enterprise consulting, and complex digital transformations.
